Howson, John Saul

Howson, John Saul
(1816–85)
   Theologian.
Howson was educated at the University of Cambridge and he was ordained to the Anglican ministry in 1845. He had a successful career and ultimately he became Dean of Chester. He was the author of the Life and Epistles of St Paul, but today he is chiefly remembered for his article ‘Deaconesses in the Church of England’, which appeared in the Quarterly Review of 1861. This did much to revive the order of Deaconesses in England and paved the way for the decisions to ordain women as Deacons and priests in the 1980s and 1990s.
